Covered dock with an asphalt shingle roof over a lake, with rope railing and solar lights on the pilings

Case Study

Covered Waterfront Retreat

A covered dock built as a shaded, relaxing space on the water, with a painted wood structure, rope railing, and composite decking throughout.

Overview

A Shaded Place on the Water

This dock is built around shade rather than open sun. A covered structure sits over the far end of the dock, creating a relaxing outdoor space right on the water, out of direct sun and weather. The roof is finished with traditional asphalt shingles, and the wooden structure underneath, including the ceiling and attic area, was painted in a custom color chosen by the client rather than left as bare or stained wood.

Underfoot, the dock floor uses composite Trex decking throughout. Instead of a modern cable railing system, this project uses traditional rope railing, strung between painted posts along the full length of the walkway. Solar-powered lights on the pilings keep the dock lit after dark.

Layout

A Covered Place to Relax

The roof does more than keep the sun off the decking below it. It turns the end of the dock into an actual outdoor room, shaded and set apart from the open walkway leading out to it. Looking up, the ceiling and attic framing carry the same painted finish as the rest of the structure, so the underside of the roof reads as finished space rather than exposed framing.

Combined with the rope railing along the walkway and the solar lighting on the pilings, the dock is set up for time spent on the water rather than just a quick trip out and back, a covered spot to sit, out of the sun, with the lake right there.
